The idea for this site sprouted while chatting with a friend about New York City, a wonderful weekend getaway from my home in Western Massachusetts. But the expense of accommodations renders such excursions few and far between. I got to thinking about the growing home exchange movement that's all the buzz for the right reasons: it's economical, easy and a fun way to explore new cities and towns. I thought about my own town of Northampton, Massachusetts -- beautiful and rich in culture, a great destination for children and grown-ups alike. But a quick search for home exchange opportunities in Northampton turned up next to nothing. Then it dawned on me. My family and I live a block from Smith College, drawing hundreds of alumnae, parents and others throughout the year. Not to mention that during peak seasons such as the start of school, parents weekend, graduation and reunion, accommodations in town are hard to come by. What about a website dedicated to the exchange of homes between those who live near college and university campuses and those who visit them? And while alumni are signing up, perhaps they would like to exchange with others from their alma mater. With a thumbs up from friends, neighbors and many people affiliated with the several schools in the area, Campus Home Exchange was born. In addition to being practical and affordable, home exchange provides an opportunity to connect with people in other communities. It not only solves a very real financial challenge for travelers, trading resources seems healthier and more responsible in a way. It's a "back to basics" way of doing things that I think a lot of us are looking for. So welcome to what I hope will become a go-to resource for students and their families, alumni and other college-affiliated folks seeking the comforts of home away from home...without a hefty price.
